What's On This Week Sep 6 - 12

September's a great month for fans of quality Sci Fi, with Battlestar Galactica Season 3 (in double helpings), and the Battlestar Galactica film, Razor, both screening.

If you love the show as much as we do, this week is going to be great, because they are both showing on SCI FI! Can we get a Frak yeah? Frak YEAH!

Lock yourself into your own personal Viper (Mark II or VII) cockpit and get ready for the pure awesomeness that is BSG, on Tuesday and Saturday.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA - SEASON 3 DOUBLE EPISODES

Flash! Ah-aaah! A Camp Classic On Blu-Ray

Flash Gordon (1980) is now out on Blu-ray.

People get all uppity and excited by Star Wars in many ways. The original movie, whilst a good time, is in fact a very important milestone in Science Fiction. Whilst not quite Battlestar Galactica (2003) in its grittiness, Star Wars bought a level of 'reality' to Science Fiction that had never been seen before. The concept of the 'used universe' put the audience into the story in a way never done before.

The Week in Geek Issue #26

Hail and well met readers!

This week the writer’s been immersing himself in the Conan stories of Robert E Howard, in preparation for running an event at an upcoming convention. (Sydcon 2010- be there! ). I have a lot of love for Howard’s work – say what you will about some of his views (1930’s Texas wasn’t the most… enlightened place by modern standards), but the man could spin a story like no other. Take the opening from the first Conan tale, The Phoenix on the Sword: "Know, oh prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars” .

Utterly Committed Cyborg Tattoo of the Day

You might be a committed Sci Fi fan, sure. You may wear the brown coat. You may even have a Star Fleet uniform tucked away in your closet.

Nothing, however, beats a good geeky tatt.

This one we found at digitalndotnet, and an impressive piece of work it is to. It looks like a cross between cyborg technology with a steampunk twist, very effective from a few feet away. Can't imagine what the results are like at the local swimming pool!

So - there are probably more hardcore Sci Fi tatts out there, (you may have one yourself) but we think this is one of the more successful. Certainly the pick of the day.

IMAX: Hubble 3D -- Just Go See It

Starring The Hubble Space Telescope, John M Grunsfeld and crew, narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio
Director Toni Myers
Rated G
Out Now

A simple question: should I bother to go and see Hubble at IMAX?
A simple answer: yes.

Hubble 3D is a documentary that looks at what it takes to repair the Hubble Space Telescope, in space. It then looks at what the Hubble looks at. Both aspects are simply breathtaking. In 3D, the effect is simply amazing, and takes this film beyond mere entertainment and to a place which is, well, ‘important’. If you have kids, it’s something that you need to show them.

Zack Snyder Previews Legend of the Guardians

Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole is a bit of an enigma for theatre goers. Coming to cinemas on September 30, it is a 3-D adventure film featuring the world of Kathryn Lasky, Ga'hoole, a place populated by owls. It is a fifteen book series, but has been turned into a single adventure by Australian company Animal Logic, and director Zack Snyder.

The trailer footage has some people scratching their heads. Sure, the digital world, and the 3-D effects are amazing, but are we ready for "Lord of the Owls'? Director Zack Snyder is extremely confident that we are. He discussed the film at length in a recent presentation in Sydney where he showed 20 minutes of stunning footage that transports the question of 'maybe' to 'when' to see Ga'hoole.

Are you an aspiring Sci Fi (or, you know, a bit more hardcore, spec fic) writer? Or just a big fan? Willing to be in Melbourne later this week?

Then we have news on what could be a life changing experience.

Aussiecon4, home of this year's World Science Fiction Convention, will be kicking off this Thursday, September the 2nd.

This year's line-up is luminous, to say the least, with some of the world's greatest living authors visiting Melbourne, among them Cory Doctorrow, Alan Baxter, Gregory Benford, John Scalzi, Robert Silverberg, Shaun Tan and Kim Stanley Robinson.

Flying cars have been a staple of unfullfilled Sci Fi fantasies since even before The Jetsons. Now, however, with the American Military behind them, we may be flying about and then parking in no time.

The Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has selected two companies to proceed with the next stage of its Transformer, known as TX, a fully automated four-person vehicle that can drive like a car and then take off and fly like an aircraft to avoid roadside bombs

The official spec for Transformer from DARPA has asked companies and researchers to come up with a flyable vehicle that can carry up to four people, is capable of vertical takeoff and landing and can travel without having to refuel at ranges for 250 nautical miles (with a combination of driving and flying).

What's On This Week Aug 30 - Sep 5

This week kicks off not so much with a bang but a gigantic rolling fireball of drama as the Heroes Season 3 Finale explodes across Australia's TV screens.

It's going to be awesome, and epic, and not to be missed by anyone who loves a bit of a shock, a bit of a twist, and one heck of a cliffhanger.

You'd be clinically insane (Sylar insane) to miss it!

HEROES - SEASON 3 FINALE

Monday, August 30 from 7.30pm

The end of 'Fugitives' will blow your mind. A beloved heroes character will die in one of the seminal moments of this ground-breaking series. Sylar is building up his powers beyond the point where he can be stopped and it's going to take something very special from all the Heroes to stop him. As Fugitives draws to a close, he picks up yet another ability that will see him a hair away from becoming the President of the United States. And a psychopathic skull-dissecting maniac is not the kind of person one needs in a commander-in-chief.

Joss Whedon Says Serenity Was Firefly Season 2

Earlier today we sat in the southernmost sail of the Sydney Opera House and had a quick chat with Mr Joss Whedon.

Australian fans, he says "hi".

In a brief video interview (to be aired on SCI FI) Joss discussed the finer points of Buffy, Angel and Firefly.

We did also ask him about The Avengers. At the moment, with his trip to Australia and being caught up between a bout of insomnia and jetlag, he's using hotel rooms and aeroplanes as the perfect writing platform. We asked him about whether Marvel was hands on or hands off, given that a) he's Joss Whedon and b) he's got a pretty decent resume when it comes to the comics world, having penned a series of Astonishing X-Men books, Firefly and Buffy Season 8 comics. And c) he wrote the script to The First Avenger: Captain America.
