The 25th Reich: Aussie Futuristic Nazi Sci Fi Gold

News Tuesday, August 2 by Captain

It's a rare and beautiful thing, Australian Sci Fi, so when we hear about a production like 'The 25th Reich' I can't but help but tell everyone about it.

An all-Aussie production, produced by Revolution Pictures and Tait Brady's Acme Film Company Productions, it's based on a novella by Sci Fi pulp writer J.J. Solomon (the man who was the literary inspiration for movies like Earth vs The Flying Saucers and Attack of the 50FT Woman), and who inspired the 'everyday Joe goes to space' trope that you see in Sci Fi as far flung as Buck Rogers, Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica.

J.J. escaped Poland in 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising. He witnessed the murder of his parents by the Nazis, and this event came to impact much of J.J.’s later writings. J.J. eventually fell into the hands of the Soviets and three months later found passage on a freighter to America and ultimately New York.

A closet homosexual all his life, J.J. had a penchant for subversive science-fiction – often with gay and political subtext.

Publisher Hume Lachlan took on 'The Nazi Who Came to Dinner', but later changed the title to '50,000 Years Until Tomorrow'. Lachlan was supportive of the gay movement, and felt the subtext of the novella - gay repression through the Nazi-Fascist metaphor - deserved to be read by the masses.

Now that story has been updated for the cinemagoer, by Australia director Stephen Amis.

The 25th Reich is an action adventure story. With American GIs, time-travel, futuristic Nazis, alien technology and giant monsters it's the kind of rollicking adventure that the pulps were famous for. The story, basically, has a group of GI's travelling 50,000 years in time to try to avoid a future where the world is run by mutated Nazi Spiders. No one wants that, do they? Do they??!!

As you'd expect with a subject like this, the film doesn't take itself too seriously. Shot in Australia on a micro-budget, the film is currently in post-production, with CGI effects in full swing. All Australian, of course! We're hoping the resulting film will be as awesome as the poster.

Featuring costume designs by Ian Sparke (The Pacific), special makeup effects by Nik Dorning (Lord of the Rings, Australia, Troy and Knowing), editing by Bill Murphy (Romper Stomper, Mary and Max), score by Ricky Edwards (Shine, Australia, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole), and direction by Stephen Amis (The Real Thing, The Alive Tribe, Oz Encounters, UFO’s in Australia). Amis also direct the TV series, 'Funky Squad'.

The film stars a lineup of relative unknowns - Jim Knobeloch (Heaven’s Gate, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Ponderosa), Serge DeNardo (Greeks on the Roof), Angelo Salamanca, Dan Balcaban and Jak Wyld.

It's currently slated for a May 2012 release.

When we get any trailers, sfx shots, or even interviews with cast or directors, I'll post here. In the meantime, enjoy these pics and the awesomeness that is the poster.

Hello there... I just thought I'd let you know The 25th Reich web teaser and website is now live... Given that it's a wholly owned Australian indie genre film (made on a a shoestring) - I thought you'd be interested in hearing that it's practically finished and will be at AFM next week for further international sales. Revolver in the UK has already picked it up for 2012 which is fantastic news for us. I really appreciate you supporting our humble little film throughout post production too. You did a great little announcement on it back in the middle of the year. Anyway, thanks again - and enjoy the teaser! A mate of mine in marketing once said that there are always two genres that will always sell books and movies. 'Boobs' and 'Nazis'. What can I say.
